An escaped mental patient, Duane Barry, holds four people hostage. Claiming to be a former alien abductee, he insists aliens are coming to take him again. Special Agent Fox Mulder [David Duchovny] believes Barry's claims and risks his life to help him until his partner, Dana Scully [Gillian Anderson], uncovers evidence proving Barry is delusional. When Barry escapes custody, he takes a new hostage - Scully - vowing to give her to the aliens in his place.
Truth and illusion collide with riveting intensity in this twisting, no-holds-barred episode of The X-Files. As Mulder searches for his partner, the spectre of extraterrestrial life and shadowy forces of government conspirators combine to make the truth more elusive than ever. The Truth is Out There.
Inside Cover - Behind the Scenes: Going to the dentist is nothing compared to what Duane Barry goes through end aliens drill a laser beam into his teeth. To make the drilling look authentic, special effects supervisor Dave Gauthier built a small clear water manifold and placed it in actor Steve Railsback's mouth. A thin tube connecting the manifold exited his mouth off camera, mineral water and air was blown through the manifold which, on camera, looks like small particles flying up as the laser beam drills. The chilling effect will send shivers down your spine.
Note: This scene was edited out of the original version of "Duane Barry" when it was screened on Channel 10.
